Our Story

Picks and Stones is a small business, located on California's Redwood Coast in the city of Arcata. In the past five years we have supplied thousands of guitarists, bass, and mandolin players around the world with quality one of a kind gemstone guitar picks.

Our picks are hand-crafted from rough stone by Johnny Wood. Johnny has been playing guitar for over 20 years and studying lapidary for 7 years. He studied the art of shaping and polishing rocks with master lapidist, Nevin Franke, of Burnie's Rock Shop in Madison, Wisconsin. He experimented with agate guitar picks wondering what, if any potential they had for his own playing. He wasn't disappointed! Over time, he perfected his stone picks to fit his own high standards.

In 2003, Johnny and his original partner, Megan Blodgett, moved to Arcata, California, and Picks and Stones was born! Using Megan's web and bookeeping skills, Picks and Stones has grown into a thriving small business. In 2008 Johnny became the sole proprietor of Picks and Stones as Megan devotes more time to her career. We thank Megan for all of her help!

I didn't know what to expect from a stone pick, and spending this much on a pick was either going to be a great decision or a really bad one. Now that I've played with it a few hours, I'm delighted with the brilliant tone and wonderful resonance. The attack is not as agressive as plastic, very smooth. Triplets are effortless. I seem to get from string to string quicker, but who knows. I was a little wary of spending twenty bucks on a pick, but there is no wear at all and after a year I still have it.
